If you have the opportunity to just record one or two instruments - do it. This will force you into doing some dynamic work with volume - but you can generally find a happy meduim between velocity and volume.ĥ. A lower velocity will sound more realistic and less "computer-y". Use the expression tool in the piano roll to make your instruments sound more "human"Ĥ. You'll need to fiddle with the attack and release envelops in the EXS 24 sampler - I find that setting both of them to just under 50% works well with most strings.ģ. If you have access to the Vienna Software instruments - use those - but the standard bundle plus the jam packs will be just fine.ġ.Create two iterations of each instrument in staccato and legato (adding pizzicato if you need it) and split your notes up between those tracks depending on the note length.Ģ. Logic Pro comes with a pretty great sample library if you know how to manipulate it. It's not without its faults but it has replaced almost every program I use. If it was me I'd beg them to play the piece in full orchestra. You'll still have to tweak the part to make it sound right but it may sound better. You could get a chamber orchestra to play it and then try reinforcing that performance with MIDI parts. The woodwinds in Garritan are not very good at all (in my opinion). I can usually get decent string "performances" with Garritan, but that's probably because I grew up playing violin. It requires a lot of manipulation to get MIDI performances of orchestral pieces to sound good. The parts are still going to sound sterile and fake. The biggest issue you're going to have is that just getting a better sample set is not going to help much. I think Alphabet_Master meant General MIDI sounds-and yes, almost anything sounds better than those. You're still using MIDI no matter what sample set you are using, you're just using different sounds. The one thing that Alphabet_Master mentions is that the sounds are better than MIDI. I use this and with some major manipulation you can get a decent sound out of it. Alphabet_Master mentioned Garritan Personal Orchestra. It's more than likely the sounds included with your sound card. If the orchestra spends an hour working on 3 minutes of your piece, I think you will be much happier with the result than if they spent an hour on the entire 20 mins. I would say it's likely that someone looking over your portfolio would appreciate a smaller, more polished chunk of music that you feel best represents you. I think you are much better off using Garritan sounds in Finale if you have them.Īlternately, have you considered taking an excerpt of your piece and having the orchestra play that? 15-20 minutes is a loooong chunk of music, especially if you plan on having more than 1 or 2 pieces in your portfolio. If you have an orchestral pack of sampled instruments that might work, but I haven't personally tried it. I don't see you having many options in Logic unless you save each instrument as a separate MIDI track, put them in as separate tracks in Logic and then find suitable sounds for each instrument. ![]() My biggest gripe is that with an orchestral piece there is so much you are not getting when you play it back with Finale like: the delicate dynamic balance between the instruments, the player blending with the player next to them, some instruments always being way too loud no matter what dynamic you assign them (clarinets). If you have a version of Finale with Garritan Orchestra sounds you can use those, they are samples of actual instruments and they tend to sound a million times better than MIDI. ![]() ![]() Hello, just finishing up a Masters in Composition here.
